On October 16th, 2012 the Association of Manufacturing Excellence (AME) announced that Sur-Seal® would be one of the 4 companies receiving the AME Manufacturing Excellence Award for 2012.
Sur-Seal® set it's sights on the AME Manufacturing Excellence Award in early 2010 when the company started on it's World Class Journey, a project orchestrated by Sur-Seal's® Director of Enterprise Excellence, Mick Wilz. Sur-Seal's® World Class Journey was intended to be a 3 year manufacturing process overhaul ending in 2013, upon completion the hoped to be chosen as a recipient for the 2013 AME Manufacturing Excellence award. The company applied for the award in 2012 in an effort to get feedback from the judging committee about where Sur-Seal® still needed to improve. So it was nothing less than a total shock when the committee called to request an onsite visit, something only done for finalists.
“There were two things that really impressed the group this year,” explains Paul Kuchuris, AME President. “The company’s 20-point assessment system used to rate performance and its unique value stream map, brought to life for employees in 3D by using Legos. These creative and thought-provoking tactics increased the value added by each employee from $62 in 2008 to $96 in 2011.”
AME’s Manufacturing Excellence Awards honor North American manufacturing plants that demonstrate significant progress in their journeys toward enterprise excellence through continuous improvement over a three-year period. This award supports AME’s mission of inspiring commitment to enterprise excellence through shared learning and access to best practices.
Sur-Seal® was one of four companies to receive the AME Manufacturing Excellence award at the ceremony held October 16th, 2012. The other recipients were:
-
Silfex, a division of LAM Research; Eaton, Ohio
-
Carson Valley Roasting Plant, Starbucks; Minden, Nevada

Empi Division of DJO Global; Clark Lake, South Dakota
